Data format and file compression

The OSTIA data are provided in GHRSST-PP L4 (GDSv1.7) netCDF format and have been compressed using the Bzip2 compressor. Bzip2 provides 50% more compression than conventional GNU gzip files making each OSTIA full resolution data file ~10 MB in size. Decompression software for Bzip2 archives is freely available from the Bzip2 web site.
