Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis (OSTIA)

Overview

The OSTIA system produces a high resolution analysis of the current sea surface temperature (SST) for the global ocean.

Real Time SST monitoring

A selection of plots using OSTIA data to monitor sea surface temperature can be found here.

Data visualisation

OSTIA data can be viewed interactively here.

The OSTIA system

OSTIA uses satellite data provided by the GHRSST project, together with in-situ observations to determine the sea surface temperature. The analysis is performed using a variant of optimal interpolation (OI) described by Martin et al., 2007. The analysis is produced daily at a resolution of 1/20° (approx. 5km). OSTIA data is provided in GHRSST netCDF format every day.

Data Access

Access to OSTIA data is available by e-mailing the MyOcean service desk. Click here for more information about MyOcean.

Provision from the Met Office of a once-a-day run of the real-time global high-resolution OSTIA data-set, available on an FTP server, is provided on a reasonable-endeavours basis, and the Met Office reserves the right to restrict the service without advance notice for security or support reasons. Subject to the terms and conditions, You are permitted to use OSTIA products as described in the terms and conditions. In addition We grant to You a worldwide, royalty free, non exclusive licence to use OSTIA products:

  1. To redistribute without charge the original OSTIA products to third parties except for uncontrolled redistribution (e.g. broadcasting and web posting)
  2. To create value added or derivative products
  3. To licence value added or derivative products to third parties provided that You acknowledge the source of the OSTIA products in the following manner: "This product has been derived from Met Office data"

Important: You must complete the data licence application form below before the using the data. This only needs to be completed once for each user.
