Overview
The pages linked below show the differences between last weeks sea surface temperature (SST) and
multiyear means for the same time of year (climatology), and differences between several current SST
analyses. Four climatologies have been used:
- NCEP/NOAA (Reynolds) OIv2. This climatology was formed from the weekly SST analysis
performed by Reynolds et al. The climatology for the current week was formed from a daily
climatology, which in turn was computed using an average of all weeks between 1985 and 2001
containing that day of the year. The analysis resolution is 1 degree spatially. More detail can be
found on the NOAA Optimum
Interpolation home page
- Pathfinder v5.0 (NOAA/NODC). The daily Pathfinder climatology product was used. This
represents an average over the years 1985 to 2001. The resolution of the raw product is 4.5km,
although the climatology was regridded (by area averaging) to 0.5 degrees when used here. More
detail can be found here.
- Levitus 98. The Levitus / WOA 1998 climatology was also used. This is a monthly
climatology covering 1900-1997. The climatology was linearly interpolated from the nearest months
to the centre of the analysis week or day before comparison.
- ENACT. The ENACT
project carried out a series of experiments to assimilate ocean data, resulting in several 3D
analyses covering the latter part of the 20th century. A monthly climatology was formed using the
Met Office Objective Analysis, using the years 1985 to 2001. The climatology was linearly
interpolated from the nearest months to the centre of the analysis week or day before comparison.
As well as a surface temperature, several depths are presented : 0-30m, 30-60m, 60-90m and
90-155m.

The weekly analyses are carried out on Thursday evenings and cover the previous week from Thursday
